Compare Medicare Supplemental Insurance Plans

When trying to Compare Medicare Supplemental Insurance Plans its not always the easiest thing to do. We will assist you in finding the correct plan.

In the ’60s, Medicare became active and began providing health insurance for Americans over the age of 65; Medicare now covers nearly half of their enrollees’ health care expenses. Other people who are also eligible for Medicare, regardless of their age, include those with disabilities and certain conditions like the final stages of renal disease. Medigap insurance serves one purpose. Medigap, also known as Medicare supplemental insurance, pays for the health care bills which your Medicare plan does not.

First let’s address what Medicare covers in order to understand what your needs for supplemental insurance coverage are. If you have an original Medicare plan, you generally have basic hospital insurance, which insurance companies call “Medicare Part A,” and also have medical insurance under Medicare Part B. Typically only those insured with original Medicare plans are eligible for Medicare supplemental insurance policies. The general term of “hospital coverage” under Medicare Part A refers to most in-patient services, hospice care and assisted home health care expenses. Medicare Part B, general medical insurance, is for covering outpatient hospital care, preventive health tests and services, and clinical lab work. Common expenses not included under Medicare include long-term care which is not deemed “medically necessary,” over 100 days of skilled nursing home care after a hospital stay, hearing aids and health care received overseas while traveling.

Ten different Medicare supplemental insurance plans are available to choose from and can definitely help to reduce your overall medical expenses. Starting in the ’90s, you could finally compare Medicare supplemental insurance plans easily and understand their respective benefits because that’s when most states became required to sell Medigap insurance policies which met national, minimum standards. Begin comparing Medicare supplemental plans by using one simple test; ask if your Medigap plan covers your specific expense. Below you will find brief summaries of some popular benefits offered within these various plans, and this list will help you start to compare Medicare supplemental plans.

Prescription drug coverage, a popular insurance benefit found in various Medicare supplemental policies until 2006, is now offered specifically under a private Medicare Part D plan. In order to obtain the Medicare Part D drug benefit, individuals can join a prescription drug plan, also referred to as a PDP plan, or a Medicare Advantage plan to cover both medical services as well as drug prescriptions. It is also important to note that not all drugs are eligible for coverage under these supplemental plans. Any prescription medications for treating weight problems, erectile dysfunction, fertility complications, common coughs or colds, vitamins, barbiturates, benzodiazepines and some experimental drugs do not qualify for coverage. Please note that only private insurance companies with the approval of Medicare can offer this additional prescription drug coverage.

It’s easiest to compare Medicare supplemental plans when sorting them by their benefits. You can get foreign emergency health care while traveling abroad with supplemental Plans C, D, F, G, M and N. These plans offer up to around $50,000 of coverage for most health emergencies and care abroad. You’ll find coinsurance for a skilled nursing facility offered in Plans C, D, F, G, M and N; however, Plan K only covers 50 percent and Plan L only covers 75 percent of this expense. Coverage for your part A deductible is available in Plans B, C, D, F, G and N; however, Plans K and M cover 50 percent of this expense while Plan L covers 75 percent of this cost. For Part B deductible coverage the choices are much more limited: only Plans C and F offer this feature, while Plan G will pay 100 percent of excess Part B expenses. It is up to you to choose your supplemental insurance wisely.
